THE WOMEN'S CENTER |
|
Women in their roles as mothers, caregivers, employees, volunteers, and persons have always had extreme demands placed on them. At the center of a hub-and-spoke system, they are also more likely to seek therapy or recommend it to others. The Women's Center will, over time, seek to offer a resource for women. |
Unique Challenges for Womeno Stress from multiple roleso Single parenting responsibility o Domestic violence o Limitations on access to health care, education and social services. o Poor nutrition and obesity o Income and Poverty o Unemployment and Broken Careers |
RelationshipsWomen are the hub in a spoke system that extends to their spouse, friends, children, parents and community. They are not solitary figures, except in very old age. Managing the conflicts, stress, and even potential for violence in many of these relationships is a challenge. Relationships can either be a source of energy and support or a drain. Diagnosis and therapy in a woman's environment requires testing and treatment of the family system. Women are challenged over their entire lifetime. |
| Mothering, Care-Giving and the Balancing ActNearly half of all marriages end in divorce. Regardless, women bear the major responsibility for birthing, dealing with post-partum depression, the stress of fertility, the challenge of dealing with a baby, often while trying to hold down a job and function at "super-mom" levels. At mid-life, women deal with separation, extra-marital relationships, student emotions and behavioral issues, all at a time when parents are entering the final phase of their life. Caregiving for parents can involve issues of death, chronic illness, dementia, nursing care, and depression. All of this is a balancing act that takes its toll on women's health. And, even though women outlive men, the quality of their life, attainment of dreams and aspirations, happiness and joy can easily be sacrificed. Important issues of boundaries, coping, ownership of other's problems and reasonable expectations necessitate constant examination. |
